The United States had maintained a military presence in northeastern Syria since 2015, when US-backed forces began operations against the Islamic State (ISIS) in the region. After the territorial defeat of ISIS in 2019, the US continued to keep several hundred troops stationed in northeastern Syria to help secure oil fields, support the local Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and counter the influence of Russia and Iran in the area.
